About the Author

Barbara Wilson-Clay, BS, IBCLC, has been assisting breastfeeding families as a La Leche League Leader since 1981. She became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 1987. Barbara serves on local, national and international boards and coalitions to promote breastfeeding, and maintains a busy private practice in Austin, Texas. She is an outspoken advocate for increased clinical education for lactation consultants and for high standards for the emerging profession of lactation consulting. Barbara is nationally known as an author and lecturer. She is a founding member of the board of directors of the Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin, and served a term on the board of directors of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Barbara and her husband, David, have been married for 31 years, and have three daughters.

Kay Hoover, M Ed, IBCLC, is employed as the lactation consultant for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health in the Division of Early Childhood, Youth, and Women's Health, where she assists Philadelphia hospitals in becoming more supportive of breastfeeding. She also maintains a private practice that she started after becoming certified in 1985. Kay has worked as a hospital lactation consultant at two different hospitals. She has a national reputation as a lecturer and author. Kay has been a La Leche League Leader since 1971, and she is actively involved in several breastfeeding organizations. She served for six years as a member of the board of directors of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Kay and her husband of 36 years, Charlie, raised their three sons in the greater Philadelphia area.
